In the traditional publishing model, readers have limited access to scientific papers; authors do not have copyright for their own papers, and cannot post their papers on their own websites, which presents a significant barrier to the sharing of knowledge, as well as being unfair to authors. The open access publishing model, in which papers are distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution License, represents the new publishing trend. Open access can overcome the drawbacks of the traditional publishing model and help scholars build on the findings of their colleagues without restriction.
