According to foreign reports, a New Zealand glass pipes advocacy group has asked the Ministry of Health to reject the information recently disclosed by the World Health Organization (WHO), which has incorrect and negative effects on smokeless nicotine products jet water pipes.
Aotearoa Vapers Community Advocacy Organization (AVCA) has written to Health Minister Jenny Salesa calling on New Zealand to support the current global scientific evidence.
New Zealand's Ministry of Health is preparing to speak at the ninth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO-FCTC) to be held in The Hague, Netherlands, in November this year.
AVCA wrote: We sincerely urge the representatives participating in COP9 to uphold the right to health and implement measures to reduce tobacco hazards based on factual and scientific evidence, which is the key strategy to solve the existing gap in tobacco control.
Nancy Loucas, director of AVCA, said that consumers have been excluded by WHO-FCTC, so the public interest in New Zealand represented by the Ministry of Health depends entirely on the Ministry of Health. We need her to represent our interests on the basis of practical decisions based on current scientific evidence and proven information to reduce the benefits of risk products.
AVCA wrote that there are a large number of scientific research and statistical evidence reports that the hazards of glass pipes products do not exceed 5% of the hazards of combustible tobacco. Thousands of smokers around the world have lookah glass successfully quit smoking and used ENDS (Electronic Nicotine Delivery System), HTP (Heated Tobacco Products) and snuff's flammable tobacco.
Ms. Loucas said that despite such evidence, WHO-FCTC continued to publish information, reports and guidelines, which contained some inaccuracies about glass pipes. It insists that electronic nicotine delivery systems and smoke-free substitutes will not help smokers quit smoking. It is more harmful than combustible tobacco, and nicotine is equivalent to heroin in addiction.
She believes that WHO is being influenced by vested interest groups that provide funds to the organization.
She said that the World Health Organization's 2019 Global Tobacco Epidemic Report and the World Health Organization's Question and Answer Details on glass pipes were written and funded by individuals with vested economic interests in developing nicotine replacement therapy.
She believes that vested interests have spoiled information to serve the political and financial interests of Bloomberg Philanthropy Foundation and Gates Foundation, which provide nearly half of WHO-FCTC funds.
AVCA wrote in a letter to Minister Serra that WHO is lying to protect their own economic interests and satisfy their private donors. They are not objective. They did not focus on the responsibilities entrusted to them by the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control to promote people's health and the right to access information about their healthy choices. "
AVCA continues to call for New Zealand's stance on smokeless nicotine products to be made public before the Ministry of Health publishes the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control in The Hague later this year.
